Formed 10.6.40 in Rome as General der Deutschen Luftwaffe beim Oberkommando der König. Ital. Luftwaffe (ITALUFT), from Luftwaffenattaché Rom. Initially performed the duties of a Feldluftgaustab, but took control of all flying units in Italy on 15.6.41, when X. Fliegerkorps moved to Greece, until II. Fliegerkorps arrived on 1.12.41.
In 7.44 replaced Fliegerführer 2, and was redesignated General der Deutschen Luftwaffe in Mittelitalien. On 6.9.44 took over all duties from Luftflotte 2, and was redesignated Kommandierende General der Deutschen Luftwaffe in Italien. The Stab was enlarged by absorbing 2. Flieger-Division and Feldluftgau XXVIII.
