Formed 4.40 in Luftgau VII with 5 Batterien (1. - 3. schwere, 4. - 5. leichte). Until 7.42 known as Res.Flak-Abt. 256.
In 1942 3./gem.256 became 2./183, and was reformed from 4./182.
Reorganised as a schwere Abteilung in 1943:
1./gem.256 became 3./191, and was reformed from 1./353
2./gem.256 became 4./166, and was reformed from 1./643
3./gem.256 was disbanded and reformed
4./gem.256 became 4./633, and was reformed
5./gem.256 became 3./5075. and 6./s.256 was formed in late 1944 (5. from 2./575, 6. from 1./603).
